"Beasts” is the second collection of poetry by Krišjānis Zeļģis.
The protagonist of Krišjānis Zeļģis’ collection of poetry – an educated and curios city dweller – goes into nature in search of impressions. His main focus is on the wild beast which does not avoid contacts with human beings, is covetous and unpredictable, and has both fun and anger in store for the hunter. These poems put a question: is there a difference between human beings and animals, as the behaviour of people, described in the collection, shows much of the brutality, instinctiveness and unpredictability characteristic of beasts.
