In 2008, the exhibition “19th Century Portrait in Latvia”, which culminated in one of the largest and longest-running projects of its kind – a series of exhibitions dedicated to Latvian portrait art that spanned three centuries – was opened in Rundāle Palace Museum.
The book “Portrait in Latvia. 19th Century” includes both the catalogue of the exhibition and a series of scholarly articles on the portrait genre.
The catalogue section of this book includes 565 portraits – the works that were on display at the exhibition, as well as some portraits selected for the exhibition but not displayed due to lack of space. The catalogue is organized according to the alphabet of the artists’ surnames, including short biographies of the artists. Each portrait is supplemented with background information as well as a brief biography of the depicted persons.
