The series “Classics of Latvian Art” is supplemented with a book about Leo Svemps (1897–1975).
Nature gifted Leo Svemps with a great talent for painting, a joyous sense of colour and the courage to create freely and without conventional inhibitions. Historical shifts divided his career into two parts. In 1940, at age 43, the highly regarded painter and lawyer became a leading Soviet artist and public figure. At the same time, Leo Svemps’ strong character could not be broken by ideological dogmas, and he only painted still lifes and landscapes rather than the realistic themes demanded by the zeitgeist.
