18 November

18 November is the Proclamation Day of the Republic of Latvia. Congratulations Latvia!

The proclamation of Latvian independence occurred on a rainy evening on 18 November at the Second Riga City Theatre (now the National Theatre). The hurried circumstances meant that the ceremony was not publically advertised, but 1200 entry tickets were issued. There was no huge crowd of people around the theatre, no public cheering, only a red-white-red flag flying above the theatre building. (..) The press also emphasized the simple, unpretentious character of the whole event. (..) The atmosphere in the hall before the ceremony was reminiscent of a Saturday evening in a farmstead, when it is put into order after the working week.
