Mikhail Eisenstein. Themes and Symbols in Art Nouveau Architecture of Riga 1901–1906

Solveiga Rush

In Riga, Art Nouveau gained its most important expression through architecture – the buildings of the late 1890s and 1900’s changed the face of the city. This book introduces the life of the father of world-famous film director Sergej Eisenstein, who was equally well known in the context of Riga – the building engineer and architect Mikhail Eisenstein – and describes the houses he built in Riga.

Within the scope of Riga’s Art Nouveau architecture, Eisenstein has been variously regarded, but there is no doubt that he in particular created the most opulent and admired Art Nouveau buildings. Particular attention is given in this publication to details of the buildings’ lavish decor.
